How GiveLocally started

People often ask me, "How did you come up with the idea for GiveLocally?"

The truth is, it wasn't born in a boardroom or during a business meeting. It started in my bedroom, staring at a wardrobe full of clothes I could no longer wear.

After my pregnancy, my body had changed. I had gained quite a bit of weight, and many of my favourite clothes no longer fit me. The thing was, these weren't old clothes. Most of them were still in great condition. Some had only been worn a few times.

I knew someone else could use them, so donating them seemed like the obvious choice.

Or so I thought.

I started searching online for places where I could give them away. I expected to find a platform that made donating simple. Instead, I found myself jumping from one website to another.

Some platforms charged fees. Others were mainly focused on collecting money rather than physical items. A few required complicated processes that made donating feel like more work than it should be.

The more I searched, the more frustrated I became.

Eventually, I gave up.

I ended up throwing those clothes away.

Even today, I wish I hadn't.

Every time I think about it, I remember how wrong it felt. Those clothes still had value. Someone could have worn them, loved them, and benefited from them. Instead, they became waste.

And that's when a question kept coming back to me:

Why is it so hard to give away something for free?

A few days later, I shared this experience with some friends.

To my surprise, almost everyone had a similar story.

Someone had children's toys sitting in storage.

Another friend had kitchen appliances they no longer used.

Someone else had books they wanted to pass on but didn't know where.

They all wanted to help. They all had useful things to give.

But there wasn't a simple place that connected people who wanted to donate with people who actually needed those items.

That conversation became the beginning of GiveLocally.

We imagined a platform where anyone could give or receive useful items without paying unnecessary fees. A place where generosity wasn't complicated.

A place where good things didn't end up in the bin simply because there wasn't an easy way to find them a new home.

That's exactly what we're building.

At GiveLocally, we believe every item deserves a second chance before becoming waste. A winter jacket can keep someone warm. A study desk can help a student learn. Baby clothes can support another growing family. A piece of furniture can make someone's new house feel like home.

Small acts of sharing can have a much bigger impact than we realize.

Every donation helps reduce waste, supports someone in the community, and reminds us that kindness doesn't always have to come in the form of money.

GiveLocally isn't just about giving away things.

It's about creating a community where helping each other becomes part of everyday life.

It's about making generosity simple.

It's about reducing waste and making sure perfectly usable items don't end up in landfills.

And it's also about making sure no one else has to throw away something valuable simply because they couldn't find the right person to give it to.

We're only at the beginning of this journey, but our vision is clear.

We want GiveLocally to become the place people think of first when they have something to share, or when they need a helping hand.

If you've ever looked at something in your home and thought, "Someone else could really use this," then you're exactly why GiveLocally exists.

Let's build a community where giving is easy, receiving is dignified, and nothing useful goes to waste.
